Electric RC cars are popular with children and adults alike. Find out how to choose your future remote control car.
In RC modelling terms, an electric remote-control car is a miniature replica of a full-size car. It is powered either by a battery or by batteries. Its autonomy therefore depends on the type of power supply.
If the electric RC car uses a battery, you can drive it for 20 to 30 minutes after a full charge. You'll need a second or third battery if you're planning a tournament. On the other hand, if you opt for a battery-powered RC car, the range will depend on the brand and capacity of the batteries.
Although range is an important criterion, there are other points to consider when choosing the ideal electric RC car. The strength of the model is an important aspect. Miniature cars are exposed to bumps and falls, especially if you opt for RC drift cars, 4x4 RC cars or other 4x4 model prototypes.
If you're planning to make circuits in the garden, opt for an RC buggy or an RC truggy. Thanks to their big wheels and imposing size, these RC cars adapt easily to the terrain. If you plan to remote-control the car indoors, give priority to a city car or a Formula 1-style model.
Radio-controlled cars come in a range of sizes, depending on the driver's expertise, budget and means of transport. However, the more expensive and imposing the car, the more complicated it is to transport. What's more, the size of a remote-controlled car for an adult differs from that chosen for a child or a competitor. Here are the scales we recommend:
● 1/43 miniature car: ideal for a child or collector, as it is small and affordable.
● 1/18 miniature car: this replica is suitable for small tracks of your choice.
● 1/8 miniature car: eight times smaller than the real car, it offers a large fleet of choices for those looking for classic cars.
● 1/6 model car and 1/5 model car: of imposing size, it is recommended for those who already have expertise in RC modelling.
For an introduction to model making, 1/10 scale is recommended. Choose your radio-controlled car from leading brands such as Traxxas, HPI-Racing, Thunder Tiger, Carrera, Kyosho and Tamiya.
Electric RC cars are easier to handle for beginners. No mechanical skills are required. A full charge is all it takes to get this miniature car up and running. It makes less noise and is suitable for an urban environment. What's more, no specific maintenance is required to keep it in good condition.
Its biggest weakness, however, is its range. It is limited to 30 minutes, while charging time lasts up to an hour. Electric RC cars are also more expensive, especially if parts are broken or worn out.
