The Sukhoi Su-34, known under the export designation Su-32 (NATO code : Fullback), is a Russian tactical bomber with anti-ship capabilities. During the 1970s and 1980s, the Soviet tactical bomber force relied primarily on MiG-27s and Su-24Ms. Faced with the threat of new intelligent and high-precision weapons, the USSR decided to develop the Su-34 to adapt to these developments. Its Western equivalent is the Tornado IDS.

The Russian Air Force deployed Su-34s to Syria in support of the Syrian Army during the Syrian Civil War . From October 2, 2015, shortly after the start of the Russian military intervention in Syria, Su-34s carried out bombing missions from the Syrian base of Hmeimim. In August 2016, Su-34s and Tu-22M3s took off from Iran's Hamedan base to strike targets of the Islamic State and the Fatah Al-Sham Front in the provinces of Aleppo, Deir ez-Zor and of Idlib, destroying several ammunition depots, command posts and training camps.
