What is the Mirage 2000?

The Dassault Mirage 2000 is a military fighter aircraft designed and built in France by Dassault in the late 1970s. Similar to the Mirage III in its delta wing design, it is in fact an entirely new aircraft, with a larger wing area to improve manoeuvrability and equipped with fly-by-wire controls. The Mirage 2000 is mainly used by the French Air Force, which has received 315 of them, while the other 286 were exported to eight different countries. This fighter aircraft entered service in 1984.

Over the years, many versions have been produced: 

  • The Mirage 2000C, a single-seat fighter-bomber and used for air defence.
  • The Mirage 2000B, a training aircraft that differs from the Mirage 2000C by having a second cockpit.
  • The Mirage 2000-5, a modern version of the 2000C. It is equipped with display instruments to replace the analogue ones and a new RDY radar, giving it simultaneous firing capabilities on several targets with its MICA missiles.
  • The Mirage 2000-9, a version capable of air-to-air missions with capabilities similar to the 2000-5, air-to-ground with Black Shaheen missiles and air-to-surface with Exocet missiles.
  • The Mirage 2000N, a specialised nuclear strike version in service from 1988 to 2018.
  • The Mirage 2000D, a two-seat air-to-ground conventional all-weather assault version specific to France.
  • The Mirage 2000E, an export-only version, with the possibility of modifying the avionics according to the customer.
