What is the F6F HELLCAT?

The Grumman F6F Hellcat was a shipborne fighter developed to replace the F4F Wildcat in the United States Navy. Although the F6F was an extrapolation of the F4F, it was much more powerful with a 2,000 hp Pratt & Whitney R-2800 engine. Often referred to as 'Wildcat's big brother', the Hellcat, along with the F4U Corsair, was the US Navy's primary fighter during the latter part of World War II.
The Hellcat was the first US Navy fighter to clearly compete with the Japanese Zero. It was also the most successful fighter in naval aviation history, with a record of 5,223 enemy aircraft destroyed. During the post-war period, the Hellcat was systematically withdrawn from front-line service, but served as a night fighter until 1954.
