< strong>Severus Snape (Severus Snape in English) is one of the main characters in the Harry Potter saga, written by J. K. Rowling. A professor at the Hogwarts School of Magic and headmaster of Slytherin House, he was for years a feared and particularly biased master of potion brewing before being appointed by Albus Dumbledore to the position of Defense Professor against the Forces of Evil, which he has wanted for a long time. After Dumbledore's death, he became headmaster of the school for a year under the reign of the Dark Lord. A dark, proud, embittered and bitter character, he has a complex, ambiguous and somewhat indecipherable personality; he has an unattractive physique, a pale complexion, a malicious look, a sarcastic tone and oily-looking hair and skin. He shows a particular antipathy and animosity towards the hero of the saga as soon as the latter arrives at Hogwarts, always going out of his way to ridicule him while saving the day several times. Over the course of successive volumes, their two personalities clash more and more and the relationship between master and student deteriorates to the point that Harry comes to hate him even more than Snape hates him, going so far as to doubt his loyalty and treat him as an enemy. His role in the plot is difficult to interpret for the reader who is frequently led on false trails. Dumbledore appears to trust him, but he protects Draco, the son of Lucius Malfoy, and the Death Eaters seem to respect him. The nature of his loyalty and his motivations is therefore a crucial question of the saga, the answer to which is given only at the end of the seventh volume. Considered by Voldemort as his spy within the Order of the Phoenix, he is in reality a double agent, having sworn loyalty to Dumbledore, who knows his secret and who uses him in his merciless fight against the forces of Evil. Torn between two allegiances, his fascination with dark magic and the unconditional love he continues to feel for his childhood friend, Lily Evans, Harry's mother, whom he blames for failing having failed to prevent the assassination, he is led, on the long road to his redemption, to sacrifice his life so that the Dark Lord is definitively defeated.
