The P-38 Lightning played a decisive role during the Second World War.

Designed by Clarence Johnson and Hal Hibbard, this American fighter was the only one to be produced continuously from 1941 to 1945.

With more than 9,900 units built, including 3,810 P-38L variants, it distinguished itself as an interceptor, reconnaissance aircraft, long-range escort and ground attack aircraft.

Its nickname "the devil with a fork tail" says a lot about the fear it inspired. It was flown by America's most famous aces and played a key role in Operation Vengeance, shooting down Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto's plane in 1943.
