What is the VAB?

The VAB or Armoured Personnel Carrier, which entered service in 1976, is currently the most widespread troop transport vehicle in the French Army with, in 2011, 3,585 vehicles on line out of an initial order of 4,000 for the French Army.
It is most commonly armed with a 12.7 mm NATO machine gun for infantry vehicles, or a 7.62 mm NATO round on the roof for other models, but it can also be equipped with a turret with a 20 mm or 25 × 137 mm machine gun or missile launcher system (VAB HOT).
