Product description : GREEK TRIREME
Ship model GREEK TRIREME
The model represents a Greek trireme from the time of the Battle of Salamis (480 BC).
According to documents from Athens, 27 rowers (thalamites) were on each side of the lower rank, 27 rowers (zygites) on the second rank and 31 rowers (thranites) on the third rank.
Like the previous types, the triremes had large oars on the stern.
In addition to the 170 rowers recruited from the poorest sections of the free population, another 30 were on the ship.
They were archers, sailors, flutists who gave rhythm to the rowers with flutes and crew.
Each ship was commanded by a nauarchos or trierachos.
The ship was commanded on the stern by the helmsman (kybernetes).
When conditions were good, the trireme could navigate at speeds up to 12 kilometers per hour.
The main weapon of the trireme was a bronze rostrum mounted on the bow that rammed the flanks of enemy ships.
The ship was mainly moving with oars, the sails were used only during long voyages.
During the battles, the sails and the mast leaned towards the stern and only the oars were used.
The box of the model contains all the laser-cut wooden parts, the fittings in wood, metal and plastic (according to model), the fabrics for the sails, the plans and the instructions of construction.

Unclear instructions and mismeasured pieces This product is fine, but not great. The planks are too short to go the entire stretch of the hull, as the pictures show, so I had to cut the planks and use two pieces per row. This is especially problematic because it didn't come with extra whales (I think that's the correct term?) pieces, so I'll have to buy more of those to cover the full length. The instructions also don't explain how to make the stern (and there are no clear pictures)--the stern is very strangely shaped on this ship, and I'm still not sure if mine is correct. The instructions also don't explain how to deal with the intrusive hull pieces that make the base of the stern it looks like you have to sand them down to accommodate the planks, but the instructions don't say. Additionally, the pieces that go on the bottom of the hull are about 3mm too short, so there's a small between two of them. Finally, the decks dont have planking, but rather just an ugly veneer.I'm still putting it together, and hopefully there are enough plank pieces to complete the full ship. But so far it still looks nice despite it's many flaws.
