The M5A1 light tank was developed as a successor to the M3 Stuart, the first mass-produced American tank of this class. Initially retaining the M3 turret, the M5 had a welded hull with modifications to the sloped frontal armour and rear engine deck. Powered by two V8 petrol engines, it reached a speed of 58 km/h. Later, the M5A1 was fitted with a modernised turret fitted with a 37 mm gun, larger hatches, track studs and a 7.62 mm machine gun mount. Approximately 6,800 M5A1s were produced, and after initial combat in North Africa, they were deployed on the new Italian fronts in 1943 and the Western fronts in 1944. • 1/48 scale kit to assemble and paint.
