Electric and combustion-powered RC cars: how do you choose?

An internal combustion RC car has an internal combustion engine that runs on petrol, while an electric RC car has an engine powered by an electric battery. To make the right choice, you need to consider the intended use.

For domestic use, the electric RC car is recommended. It runs on a battery or rechargeable batteries. Some high-performance models can even take you to the beach on a sandy track.

For off-road use, the internal combustion RC car offers great performance and speed. Its mechanism is a miniature reproduction of a real car. It's perfect for RC model enthusiasts and competitions.

Design, scale, remote control range, autonomy and maintenance requirements are also criteria to be taken into account.

What are the different brands of remote-controlled cars?

The RC model car market is flourishing. To find remote control car models, it's best to refer to well-known brands such as Kyosho, T2M, Traxxas, HPI-Racing, Carrera, Tamiya, Thunder Tiger, etc. What's more, some models, such as RC buggies, RC truggys and other 4x4 models, require spare parts for off-road circuits.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of an electric RC car?

Electric RC cars are easy to handle and approach for beginners. It requires no engine tuning or specific maintenance. Quieter and cleaner, this model is ideal for urban environments. Some high-performance electric models can reach speeds of up to 160 km/h.

However, the electric radio-controlled car has a weakness when it comes to range. A full charge is equivalent to between 15 and 30 minutes' driving. An extra battery is needed to finish a race.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of an internal combustion RC car?

A combustion RC car has the advantage of being adjustable. Its parts can be modified to enhance its performance. Do-it-yourself enthusiasts will be pleased, because all the parts are there. Because RC cars run on petrol, a full tank can last between 30 and 45 minutes of driving.

However, an internal combustion RC car requires a lot of maintenance. They are sensitive to water and are not watertight. The fuel tank has to be drained after each run and the glow plugs have to be checked. A personal investment is required to maintain the engine.

What are the different scales of RC cars?

The size of an RC car depends on its scale. A scale of 1/10 means that the model is 10 times smaller than a real car. In principle, the ideal size is determined by the playing field. For a large track, opt for a 1/5 or 1/8 scale model. For indoor use, however, a smaller scale, such as 1/24, is recommended.
