The SAAB 37 Viggen was way ahead of its time. Unorthodox solutions were chosen by its designers, which made it possible not only to meet all the requirements placed on it, but even to surpass them in some respects.
The Swedish military ordered the jet in several different versions, all sharing a common platform.
The engine used in the airframe was the Volvo RM8, which was actually a licensed Pratt & Whitney JT8D commercial turbofan fitted with afterburner and thrust reverser.
This engine choice, together with the unique delta wing concept, gave the airframe unique capabilities, mainly during takeoff and long runways.
The tail fin was designed to be foldable for better handling in the cramped spaces of auxiliary airfields and shelters.
The avionics of the type were state of the art at the time. The Viggen was the first combat aircraft ever to be equipped with an integrated circuit computer.
