The History Of Arundel Castle
Arundel castle was founded by Roger de Montgomery on Christmas Day 1067 and he became the very first person to hold the earldom of Arundel by the graces of William the Conqueror. The castle was very badly damaged during the time of the English Civil War but they managed to restore it to its former glory in the 18th and 19th centuries. This is a big reason why people get holidays Sussex in this area.
The castle was first built in 1086 and was built as major fortification for the mouth of the River Arun. Once Roger died it was handed over to the crown under the King at the time Henry I.
The medieval time period came next and it was handed down to many different people during this period of time, not much happened. The crown seized the castle after Thomas Howard was executed for conspiring to marry Mary Queen of Scots but later it was returned to the heir of the Earls of Arundel.
The Howard family got the castle back but did nothing to it because other buildings were more important to them, this is until Charles Howard got the property. 1787 was the year in which the castle started to see more and more work carried out upon it, once this was completed a big party was held and Charles died not long after.
Queen Victoria actually visited this castle in 1846 and she really enjoyed her stay according to the resources available, many of her things are still there and after this a bit more work was carried out, this is now how you will see the castle today.
The great thing about the castle is that most of it is open to the public so make sure that if you can you can take a break from that web design job in that serviced offices Soho office and get out there to pay it a visit!
