Which Arrows are the Best for Your Compound or Recurve Bow?
You may have carefully chosen the best recurve or compound bow for you but have you considered which type of arrows that you should use? Selecting the correct arrow type is critical for success and should be a good match for your bow and be fitting for the bow’s use. Will you be using your bow primarily for hunting, competitions or target practise? What different types of arrows are available and which type is suitable for your needs?
Wood Arrows
In the past all arrows were made from wood but now wooden arrows are used only in longbow competitions and by novices. They are not generally used in other circumstances as they don’t give consistent results as there are always some differences in the weight and shape of the arrows. Wooden arrows can break easily and warp over time although they are low-priced and could be the best choose for beginners.
Fiberglass Arrows
Fiberglass arrows are consistent as they are much more uniform but they break easily as they are brittle. They are suitable for hunting and are easily fitted to different draw lengths.
Aluminium Arrows
Aluminium arrows are much stronger than those made from wood or fibreglass. They are uniformly manufactured so are consistent and reliable.They are made in a broad range of sizes and types so you will be able to find one suitable for your bow and style. Aluminium arrows are reliable and consistent which makes them ideal for hunting and for tournaments and they are also made with arrowheads that are interchangeable. They are more expensive than wood or fiberglass arrows so, if you are a beginner and tend to lose a lot of arrows, they may not be suitable. Choose a cheaper arrow until you are more proficient!
Carbon Arrows
These types of arrows are used by more serious archers as they are efficient, durable and high speed. They are made with an aluminium core surrounded by a carbon composite shell and are extremely strong so don’t easily break as fiberglass arrows can do. They are unquestionably the finest arrows you can buy but they are much more expensive so are generally used by more serious archers.
Other Considerations
Fletches now are typically manufactured from synthetic materials although you may find handmade feather fletches. Stability is given to the arrow by the fletches as it flies and to boost velocity. Try out some different types to see how the different types feel in use. The point also needs to be considered. The point used on a hunting arrow, for instance, needs to be specially designed. Lastly, protect your arrows with a quiver and always carry spare draw strings.
